New program announcement: An Afternoon of Irish Poetry in honor of St. Patrick’s Day will be held Saturday, March 15, 2014 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Loft, $5 admission.

A lively and lovely program of readings by Terry Phelan, a poet of Irish extraction living in San Rafael; Joseph Zaccardi, Marin Poet Laureate, of Fairfax; Richard Cruwys Brown, a poet living in Kentfield; and Abby Wasserman, a Mill Valley writer. Besides their own work, the poets will read from the work of William Butler Yeats, Seamus Heaney, former American Poet Laureate; Eavan Boland, a poet born in Dublin who is presently professor of English at Stanford University; and Galway Kinnell, American poet who won the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry. Work by other Irish poets, possibly including Tess Gallagher, Paul Muldoon, and James Joyce, will round out the program. RSVP by March 12.

Congratulations to Deborah Sullivan! Her “Real and Imagined” show that opens February 4, 2014 in the O’Hanlon Gallery was covered in Sunday’s Pink section of the SF Chronicle! More Members’ Opportunities: Art Works Downtown in San Rafael is seeking artists for two exhibition spaces: The Donors’ Gallery at 1325 Fourth St. is a free, juried exhibit space on street level available to artists for solo shows and small group shows. Display Space: 75 linear feet. To apply: Submit an application for approval, short description of art to be shown, and examples of the works to shown in the form of a website or 5 jpeg images. Wall art or small sculptural work only. Approval: A small committee reviews proposals to ensure art is appropriate for a public corridor, children, and event atmosphere. Your proposal will be reviewed within 3 months.

Art Works Downtown’s Underground Gallery offers an intimate exhibition space available by monthly rental to artists for solo shows, small group shows, or installations. Dimensions: 198 square feet; 69’ linear wall space; 7’8” height. Rent: $225 per month.

The Pirkle Jones Foundation will bestow its fourth individual $25,000 grant to an emerging or mid-career visual artist residing in Marin County by July 1st, 2014. Application and guidelines can be downloaded from the Pirkle Jones Foundation website (http://www.pirklejones.com/) or picked up at Smith Andersen North gallery in San Anselmo or the Gallery Route One in Point Reyes Station. The grant is offered to support a promising artist and may be used for any purpose including living expenses. The deadline for application submittal must be postmarked on or before March 31, 2014. The award will be announced by June 15, 2014.
