1. A painter fits himself to paint

2. a poet fits himself to line

3. a thought to mind, a pen to page

4. a whistle fits itself to wind, to kettle

5. a weaver fits herself to loom

6. a sculptor to stone, a bee to flower

7. skin fits itself to space

8. ocean fits itself to tide

9. birthing and dying to time

10. nothing fits itself to this moment

11. let it fall outside time, leave no trace

12. or squeeze into some unknowable space

13. vanish into a black holed phantasm

ABOUT THE JUROR

Chester Arnold

My paintings are part of a visual dialogue running the length and breadth of human history. The search for excellence in this Art and Craft has led me to explore the natural world and the human events that inhabit it, constructing narratives that celebrate and question our presence in the world.

Although representational, I seek a way of painting that is richly traditional, yet radically and surprisingly new. I attempt to articulate more than the surfaces and dimensions of reality, summoning the wordless meanings and sensations that only visual art can.

POET

ARLENE WOHL

Always a lover of poetry, it was only after I retired from a weaving practice did I plunge wholeheartedly into a daily writing practice. I joined the O’Hanlon poetry group whose encouragement led to my debut book, A Jagged Line, out in 2024. I am putting the finishing touches on my second book My Once So Bright.

My other passion is fiber sculpture and I often write ekphrastic poems that resonate with my textile work. My style ranges from form poems,  confessional, free verse, and lyrical; the primacy of sound and metaphor determines the outcome. What keeps me going is the turn, the surprise. I almost never anticipate. This is what spurs me on to write the next poem.
