Even when I was being born,

I was already longing to return to your womb—or something very much like it—

a sort of warm sea of salt and sweat

where no one is seeing me,

or noting my earnest lack of affiliation,

a place where I don’t have to choose what type of energy saving lightbulbs to buy

These days, you know, there are so many kinds of illumination:

soft light, real light, sunlight, or hazy blue—

9. which, I hear, is supposed to be very, very harmful for your mind.

And yet, even as I plot my return to your womb,

I am learning instead to take refuge in these words.

O’Hanlon Center for the Arts thanks Sergio for his time and selections
