DESCRIPTION:NO MONOPRINT JUNE 1 \nMonoprinting is a playful\, exploratory process requiring neither a press nor a background in art\n \nOn a plate of gel or plexiglass\, images are made with paint\, rollers\, sponges\, netting\, leaves or anything else which might create an interesting pattern. The focus is not upon the finished work but upon the experience of discovery and making art. \nIn the workshop\, after two or three hours\, the group gathers to discuss what has been created.  The purpose of the discussion is to help each person recognize the beauty in their work. Or\, in the words of Ann O’Hanlon\, our purpose is “to look upon a seemingly random work of our own with interest” and with “the same fulfillment… experienced on an unknown wilderness trail.” \nSundays\, 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.\n$55 | $44 OHCA members + \n$10 materials fee paid to facilitator on day of workshop \n7 people MAX\n \nART DETAIL: JANET GREENWOOD\n \n\nAbout Candis Cousins \nCandis Cousins first came to the Center in 1972. Ann O’Hanlon was alive and at that time the Center was called ‘Sight and Insight.’ On Candis’ first day\, Ann’s suggestion for working was this: “Every decision you make\, try to make the wrong decision.” \nIn 2002\, Candis returned to OHCA to join the mono printing group led by Cayen Robertson and Karen Cox. Many of her solo pieces including Home Plate\, Payday in Pukalani and Bouncing were produced and performed in the Bay Area. Her creative non-fiction stories and monologues have been published in various journals and anthologies. Her solo comedy\, KICKING FACEBOOK\, was produced and performed at The Exit SF Fringe\, The Phoenix Theatre\, The O’Hanlon Center for the Arts\, The Marsh Rising\, The Solo Mio Festival\, and United Solo in NYC. Margery created and performed the sketch comedy revue\, “Digitally Yours” with Karen Hirst produced by Theatre Rhinoceros and The New Conservatory Theatre Center.  Her solo piece Retreat was co-produced by 3GT and Brava Theater and her monologue The Fall was part of the 2023 LezWrites Monologue Night at Z Below. Margery is a 3Girls Theatre Legacy Playwright who has been with the Company since its founding in 2011. SUMMARY:Wabi Sabi Photography Workshop with Jackie La Lanne and Naomi Tamura
DESCRIPTION:Slow down\, look closer\, and discover the beauty in impermanence and imperfection. In this one-day photography workshop inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi\, students will explore how to capture the quiet poetry of the world around them through a contemplative photographic lens. \nWe’ll begin with a brief introduction to the principles of wabi-sabi\, followed by a guided photo walk on the grounds of the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts. The class emphasizes mindful seeing\, intuitive framing\, and embracing the imperfect or unexpected. Towards the end of class\, we will gather for an informal group discussion and photo review. Students are encouraged to bring previously taken images to explore whether they reflect wabi-sabi qualities. \nThis class is open to photographers of all levels. She is currently Board President of of O’Hanlon. She graduated from Sonoma State University with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Studio Art and a Masters Degree in Art Education. She loves teaching art and making photographs\, which she says have a lot in common: discovering\, making\, envisioning\, sharing\, and having fun. La Lanne\, who can often be found in the artroom wearing the earrings she made from her old bike lock keys\, has been teaching elementary art curriculum in Mill Valley public schools for many years. She is an accomplished artist\, teacher\, and photographer and has created wonderful collaborative textile projects for her five grandchildren. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Naomi Tamura is a visual artist based in Mill Valley\, California\, working in acrylic paint\, drawing media\, and photography. Her work blends representation with intuition\, exploring themes of memory\, emotion\, and atmosphere through expressive mark-making and the lens of a camera. A lifelong artist\, Tamura studied Studio Art at Scripps College and graphic design at ArtCenter College of Design\, leading to a 20-year career as a designer and art director. After stepping away from commercial work in 2011\, she returned to fine art with a renewed focus. Tamura’s creative practice reflects a range of influences—from the Bay Area Figurative Movement to Post-Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism. She has exhibited at the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts\, where she served as a former board chair\, and remains active in the local arts community. Photography plays a vital role in her process\, serving as both inspiration and a form of artistic expression.

DESCRIPTION:WE ARE OFFERING THIS WORKSHOP TWICE A MONTH \nMonoprinting is a playful\, exploratory process requiring neither a press nor a background in art\n \nOn a plate of gel or plexiglass\, images are made with paint\, rollers\, sponges\, netting\, leaves or anything else which might create an interesting pattern. The focus is not upon the finished work but upon the experience of discovery and making art. \nIn the workshop\, after two or three hours\, the group gathers to discuss what has been created.  The purpose of the discussion is to help each person recognize the beauty in their work. Here’s to life. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Jackie Ryan\n \n\nJackie Ryan\, hailed by Jazz Times as “one of the outstanding jazz vocalists of her generation\,” brings a rare combination of vocal power\, emotional depth\, and stylistic versatility that evokes legends like Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McRae. Born in San Rafael to professional singer parents—her Irish father a classically trained baritone and her Mexican mother a Teatro Degollado vocalist—Jackie was steeped in music from an early age. She began performing professionally at 15 and quickly became known for her command of multiple languages and genres\, from blues and bebop to bossa nova\, boleros\, and classic American standards. Jackie has collaborated with many jazz greats\, including Clark Terry and Paquito D’Rivera\, and has headlined venues from London’s Ronnie Scott’s to New York’s Birdland and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Her recordings regularly top jazz charts\, and her live performances—celebrated for their soul\, elegance\, and sincerity—consistently bring audiences to their feet. \n\n\n\nAbout John R. Burr \n\nJohn R. Burr is a versatile and deeply expressive pianist whose style blends jazz\, blues\, and a wide array of vocal influences—from The Beatles to the Great American Songbook. A sought-after accompanist and arranger in the Bay Area\, he regularly performs with top vocalists like Jackie Ryan and Kenny Washington. His long-standing collaborations include two decades of touring and recording with Grammy-winning banjoist Alison Brown\, with whom he co-wrote the Grammy-nominated song “Under The Five Wire.” John’s solo album *Piedmont Avenue* received critical acclaim\, and his compositions have been featured on Windham Hill releases and in *The Sims* video game soundtracks. She is a recent Board President of of O’Hanlon. She graduated from Sonoma State University with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Studio Art and a Masters Degree in Art Education. She loves teaching art and making photographs\, which she says have a lot in common: discovering\, making\, envisioning\, sharing\, and having fun. La Lanne\, who can often be found in the artroom wearing the earrings she made from her old bike lock keys\, has been teaching elementary art curriculum in Mill Valley public schools for many years. She is an accomplished artist\, teacher\, and photographer and has created wonderful collaborative textile projects for her five grandchildren. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Laurel Shear \nLaurel Shear lives and works in the California Bay Area. She opened her first New York solo show\, Daydreaming In My Nightmare\, at Fort Gansevoort in March 2018. Recent exhibitions include Right Here Right Now\, Richmond Art Center and NIAD (Richmond\, CA) My Silences Had Not Protected Me\, For Freedoms\, Fort Gansevoort\, (New York)\, Where Dreams Come True\, TSA LA (Los Angeles)\, Push\, Incline Gallery (San Francisco). She is a former member of the artist run gallery Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Los Angeles. Press for her work includes Artnet\, New York Magazine\, Brooklyn Magazine\, and Luxe Magazine\, among others. She facilitates drawing and painting workshops at O’Hanlon Center for the Arts and serves on the Board.
