Both projects were juried into the annual O’Hanlon Fiber Arts Show: “Coral Reef”\, exhibited in 2024 and “Wild Garden”\, exhibited in 2025.In addition to crochet\, Sarah enjoys embroidering on paper and fabric\, as well as creating textile collages inspired by traditional quilting. Naomi likes to try all fiber arts\, but mainly crochets\, knits and sews\, when she’s not drawing or painting. Drawing on their distinct passions and skills\, Sarah and Naomi each bring a unique and inspiring stamp to their sewing and stitching projects.

It is as unique to each artist as a person’s handwriting. \nThis workshop is designed as a welcoming introduction to drawing for adults who are curious about learning a new skill in a fun\, supportive\, and non-judgmental environment. Participants will explore and play with a range of materials while also learning the fundamentals of line\, form\, and composition. Along the way\, they will engage in both intuitive and observational approaches to drawing\, expanding their visual vocabulary while learning to see and interpret the world around them with greater attention and confidence. \nSet aside your inhibitions and learn to draw! After graduating from Scripps College with a Studio Arts Degree\, Naomi worked professionally as a graphic designer /art director in both print and online. \nNaomi is a practicing artist and philanthropist. DESCRIPTION:WE ARE OFFERING THIS WORKSHOP TWICE A MONTH \nMonoprinting is a playful\, exploratory process requiring neither a press nor a background in art \nOn a plate of gel or plexiglass\, images are made with paint\, rollers\, sponges\, netting\, leaves or anything else which might create an interesting pattern. The focus is not upon the finished work but upon the experience of discovery and making art. \nIn the workshop\, after two or three hours\, the group gathers to discuss what has been created.  The purpose of the discussion is to help each person recognize the beauty in their work. Or\, in the words of Ann O’Hanlon\, our purpose is “to look upon a seemingly random work of our own with interest” and with “the same fulfillment… experienced on an unknown wilderness trail.” \nFirst and Third Sundays\, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM\n$60 | $50 OHCA members + $10 materials fee paid to facilitator on day of workshop \n6 people MAX \nART DETAIL: JANET GREENWOOD\n \n\nAbout Candis Cousins \nCandis Cousins first came to the Center in 1972. Ann O’Hanlon was alive and at that time the Center was called ‘Sight and Insight.’ On Candis’ first day\, Ann’s suggestion for working was this: “Every decision you make\, try to make the wrong decision.” \nIn 2002\, Candis returned to OHCA to join the mono printing group led by Cayen Robertson and Karen Cox. In her own work\, Candis tries to keep moving forward without a plan\, just to see what comes. \n  \n“It is such an invigorating\, soul-finding experience to facilitate this workshop. It is as unique to each artist as a person’s handwriting. \nThis workshop is designed as a welcoming introduction to drawing for adults who are curious about learning a new skill in a fun\, supportive\, and non-judgmental environment. Participants will explore and play with a range of materials while also learning the fundamentals of line\, form\, and composition. Along the way\, they will engage in both intuitive and observational approaches to drawing\, expanding their visual vocabulary while learning to see and interpret the world around them with greater attention and confidence. \nSet aside your inhibitions and learn to draw! This class will encourage writing from personal experience in a variety of forms and lengths\, will introduce a range of narrative approaches\, and explore methods for developing a germ of memory into a substantial form. We will also consider the ethical concerns of taking liberty with “the facts” to enhance the story\, (or how much poetic license will the puritanical worm in your brain allow?) Sarah and Naomi enjoy the camaraderie of stitching with others. Both projects were juried into the annual O’Hanlon Fiber Arts Show: “Coral Reef”\, exhibited in 2024 and “Wild Garden”\, exhibited in 2025.In addition to crochet\, Sarah enjoys embroidering on paper and fabric\, as well as creating textile collages inspired by traditional quilting. Naomi likes to try all fiber arts\, but mainly crochets\, knits and sews\, when she’s not drawing or painting. Drawing on their distinct passions and skills\, Sarah and Naomi each bring a unique and inspiring stamp to their sewing and stitching projects.

DESCRIPTION:Set aside your inhibitions and learn to draw!\n6 Wednesdays: September 30 – November 4\n10:00 am to 1:00 pm \n$240 | $190 for OHCA Members \nWorkshop size: minimum 3\, maximum 6 (adults) \nMaterials Fee:$20 paid to Facilitator 1st day of class \nDrawing is fundamental to any form of visual art and can be the most easily accessible form of individual expression. It is as unique to each artist as a person’s handwriting. \nThis workshop is designed as a welcoming introduction to drawing for adults who are curious about learning a new skill in a fun\, supportive\, and non-judgmental environment. Participants will explore and play with a range of materials while also learning the fundamentals of line\, form\, and composition. Along the way\, they will engage in both intuitive and observational approaches to drawing\, expanding their visual vocabulary while learning to see and interpret the world around them with greater attention and confidence. \nSet aside your inhibitions and learn to draw! Bring your open and curious mind\, a sketchbook (minimum 11” x 14”)\, and your favorite writing tool. All other materialswill be provided. After graduating from Scripps College with a Studio Arts Degree\, Naomi worked professionally as a graphic designer /art director in both print and online. \nNaomi is a practicing artist and philanthropist. She is involved in various creative and community endeavors\, most notably serving as a former board chair of O’Hanlon Center for the Arts\, and currently serving as the longest-serving board chair at Youth in Arts in San Rafael. \nAfter raising her family and retiring from commercial work\, she refocused her energies on her many creative pursuits\, including sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for the creative process with others.\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				TICKETS cover all dates in the Series\nPlease register here on the 1st week listing

DESCRIPTION:Based on a True Story: Developing Memories Into Literaturewith Bart Schneider\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Bringing the tools of poetry and fiction to memoir. \n6 Wednesdays – 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM \nMany folks are drawn to the idea of writing a memoir but find the notion of composing a book-length account daunting. This class will encourage writing from personal experience in a variety of forms and lengths\, will introduce a range of narrative approaches\, and explore methods for developing a germ of memory into a substantial form. We will also consider the ethical concerns of taking liberty with “the facts” to enhance the story\, (or how much poetic license will the puritanical worm in your brain allow?) The instructor will introduce literary examples and offer prompts for in-class writing. DESCRIPTION:Shibori Dyeing WorkshopFacilitated by Local artist and educator Chris Hurwitz\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Explore indigo blue-dyeing methods popularized in Japan in this hands-on workshop. \nParticipants will bring their own prewashed\, 100% cotton\, silk\, or linen items to dye\, such as a T-shirt\, scarf\, baby clothes\, table napkins\, or pillow covers. Please bring small items that will fit in the communal dye bath. Chris will also provide items to be dyed for the Bazaar sale. \nDharma Trading Co. in San Rafael is a wonderful local resource for natural-fiber white clothing and other items to dye. \nBring a sack lunch to enjoy while your projects soak. Wear old clothes or dark colors. Rubber gloves will be provided. \nThe workshop is limited to 10 participants\, ages 12 and up\, with or without previous experience. Come experiment with indigo and discover the beautiful possibilities of this ancient dyeing tradition. \nOpen to ages 12+ \nFee: $45 Non-Members | $40 OHCA MembersMaterials Fee: $5\, payable to the instructor.
