SUMMARY:Developing Film with Plants w/ BEATRICE THORNTON
DESCRIPTION:Experience the world around you in a different light…\n…and learn how to develop film sustainably without traditional darkroom chemistry. In this workshop\, participants will take photos with black-and-white film\, learn about local native and invasive plants\, and develop film with low-toxicity\, homemade\, plant-based chemistry. \nThe workshop will be composed of three parts: \n1. An introduction to process: the instructor will give a brief presentation of her work and experiments with sustainable developers \n2. Photo walk and foraging for plants to use in developers: wandering individually or as a group around the grounds of OHCA or down the street in Cascade Canyon. \n3. Darkroom: making developers and developing the film. \nNo prior darkroom experience is necessary\, but please inform the instructor if you do have any experience with film developing. Participants are also welcome to bring their own 35mm or 120 cameras and developing tanks. A selection of cameras\, film\, and all other necessary materials will be provided. \nThe instructor will also offer to perform any tasks for participants — aside from actually taking the pictures. These include loading film in cameras\, loading film in tanks\, and mixing chemistry. The instructor will offer to scan film afterwards if this is desired. If film is dry by the end of the workshop\, this can be done quickly\, or participants can pick up film and scans will be emailed at a later date. \nA selection of pre-brewed plants will be available should anyone want to use these for developers. Chemicals used for developing\, stopping\, and fixing include: washing soda\, Vitamin-C\, steeped plants\, water\, and EcoPro Fixer. All chemicals will be disposed of safely by the instructor. \n  \n$72 or $60 OHCA member \nMaterials fee $20 paid to instructor day of workshop \nAttendance Limit: 8 \nRegister by Friday June 9\, 2:00 pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the instructor: \nBeatrice Thornton is an Oakland-based artist who grew up in Mill Valley. She works primarily in black-and-white film photography through the lens of bioregionalism\, engaging in awareness of our role as humans in our environments. Since returning to her home state from New York in 2018\, she has been building an art practice centered around sustainable analog photographic processes. \nBeatrice develops film and prints in her home darkroom\, creating developer recipes and using ingredients that include foraged plants\, rainwater\, and low-toxicity household ingredients in place of traditional darkroom chemicals. Her evolving photographic style mainly depicts her local landscape\, often through in-camera double exposures. She frequently pairs developers with plants featured in or that grow within the landscape pictured. \nBeatrice sees developing with plants as a circular process where the art she produces is as much about process as it is the final objects. Her work is a continuous practice of learning about photography and about native and invasive plants.

SUMMARY:Monoprinting w/ CANDIS COUSINS 6/4/23
DESCRIPTION:WE ARE NOW OFFERING THIS WORKSHOP TWICE A MONTH \nMonoprinting is a playful\, exploratory process requiring neither a press nor a background in art\n \nOn a plate of gel or plexiglass\, images are made with paint\, rollers\, sponges\, netting\, leaves or anything else which might create an interesting pattern. The focus is not upon the finished work but upon the experience of discovery and making art. \nIn the workshop\, after two or three hours\, the group gathers to discuss what has been created.  The purpose of the discussion is to help each person recognize the beauty in their work. Or\, in the words of Ann O’Hanlon\, our purpose is “to look upon a seemingly random work of our own with interest” and with “the same fulfillment… experienced on an unknown wilderness trail.” \nSundays\, 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.\n$55\, $44 OHCA members\, \n$10 materials fee paid to instructor at day of class \n7 people MAX (online registration closes at 3:00pm the prior Friday)\nParticipants must be fully vaccinated and wear masks. \nART DETAIL: JANET GREENWOOD \n  \n\n  \n \nAbout Candis Cousins \nCandis Cousins first came to the Center in 1972. Ann O’Hanlon was alive and at that time the Center was called ‘Sight and Insight.’ On Candis’ first day\, Ann’s suggestion for working was this: “Every decision you make\, try to make the wrong decision.” \nIn 2002\, Candis returned to OHCA to join the mono printing group led by Cayen Robertson and Karen Cox. In her own work\, Candis tries to keep moving forward without a plan\, just to see what comes. \n“It is such an invigorating\, soul-finding experience to facilitate this workshop. A love-fest\, a laugh-fest on the high seas of creativity!”\n– Candis \n\n

SUMMARY:Monoprinting w/ CANDIS COUSINS

SUMMARY:Art is a Way of Knowing (on Zoom) w/ PEGGY LILIENTHAL LINDEN
DESCRIPTION:Art is a means to enter\, to play with\, to dance with\, to wrestle with anything that intrigues\, delights\, disturbs or terrifies us.\n– PAT B. ALLEN\, introduction\, Art Is a Spiritual Path \nThis short series of drop-in classes offers a space for art making as personal inquiry. Using journaling and art making we open to our “‘Creative Source.” Total beginners and experienced artists are welcome. Please have art making materials of your choice and a journal for the workshop. \nThe session will provide the setting for you to explore your own creative work. This is a time to be open to exploring\, adventuring\, trying something new (or old)\, and expressing your intuition\, imagination\, thoughts or beliefs. From past sessions participants have reported an expanded a sense of clarity\, expressing themselves more creatively\, and increased insight into themselves.\n\n \n“Art is a way of Knowing”\, an insightful class led by Peggy Linden\, has given me an opportunity to explore and expand my artistic abilities and perceptions. Having four hours to work and interface with a group of gifted individuals (via zoom) engages me with new creative energy and ideas that I wouldn’t have working alone.  Peggy is an experienced guide for this enriching workshop.” – Workshop Participant. \nThis Zoom workshop is for 10 people max.  Meets on Zoom one day per month (Date/time may vary – Check calendar listing for specifics)\n \n  \n$40\, $32 OHCA members\, per session \nPeggy will send you the invite link 2 hours before start of zoom.  Check your email.  Time is Pacific Time so add 3 hours if in East Coast. \n  \n  \nPlease read Zoom prerequisite before signing up.* \n*Participants should be familiar with Zoom – how to use the chat\, how to mute and un-mute\, how to toggle between video and audio only. Ensuring your web-cam and microphone are working beforehand is essential. Having earbuds or a headset is helpful if you don’t have a private space from which to participate. \nParticipants need to provide their own art materials and a journal. Take time to create a sacred space\, comfortable and free from distractions. Having a water bottle at hand is helpful. Art materials can be really simple or elaborate. It is a great practice to improvise with what is available. \nIt is requested that participants stay until the end of the session in order to preserve the “alchemical container”. Sharing words and images at the end of the session is an important part of the practice. When we create a group “field” together\, the words or imagery that arise for any one person may have important meaning for other members of the group. The more we practice together the more connection and synchronicity we invite. \n  \n\n  \nPEGGY LINDEN – Embodiment Coaching: Combining Coaching\, Creativity & the Body \nBiography \nPeggy Linden studied with and was mentored by Ann O’Hanlon during her 20’s and 30’s and this launched her into the world of art. Peggy had the privilege of being invited to Ann’s cabin at Lake Tahoe for a week at a time on two separate occasions where all she was ‘allowed to do’ was paint all day on Ann’s deck. \nPeggy also studied with Josef Albers and Josep Grau-Garigga. Peggy’s mother was Windy Lilienthal\, the fiber-artist. They attended Ann’s workshops together. Peggy’s former husband\, David Linden was the attorney who incorporated the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts. \nPeggy combines her career as a CranioSacral Therapist (a hands-on-healing modality) with her work as a Certified Resilient Leadership Coach and an artist. Her Visual Journaling Art Workshops have elements of coaching built into them\, while also using body awareness for grounding. \nPeggy holds a Masters in Adult Education and has completed a majority of all classes for her PH.D. \n
