SUMMARY:Sunday Salon: The Songwriter "Sessions"
DESCRIPTION:Advanced ticket no longer available but you can purchase at the door.\nDoor opens at 4:30 TODAY 😛 \n  \nT \nA Sunday Salon Special Evening: The Singer Songwriter “Sessions”\nSunday September 8th – Doors at 4:40 pm\, Show at 5:00 pm\n$20\, Max 50 ppl\nCome and enjoy an evening of original music by the talented Christopher Smith along with Claudia Russel and Bruce Kaplan. Daniel Patrick will be joining Christopher Smith on the bass. \n\n\n  \n\n\nChristopher Smith is one of the best “under the radar” songwriters in the country. His acoustic based music is grounded in folk roots with american and celtic influences. His musicianship always serves the song\, and his voice is sweet and engaging. What sets Smith apart is the sheer strength of his material. He holds a listener’s attention for song after song because he writes stories that spring from interesting ideas. His songs often blend elements of humor and heart. His sound mixes both classic singer/songwriter and americana. \n\n\n  \n\n\nCalifornia singer/songwriter Claudia Russell and her trusty sidekick Bruce Kaplan traverse a wide Americana landscape\, stopping at wondrous musical landmarks along the way\, tipping their hat to string bands\, blues divas\, jazz cats\, Village folkies\, Bakersfield cowboys and Laurel Canyon troubadours. Driven by Claudia’s expressive voice and distinctive guitar style\, it all comes together beautifully. \n\n\n  \n\n\nClaudia has a knack for crafting tightly written songs that carry you to the sweet spots of life. Bruce’s melodic accompaniment\, on mandolin and electric guitar\, is spot-on. All of this is served up with a generous helping of homespun humor and shaggy dog stories\, making for a heartfelt and humorous show of deeply engaging music. And audiences and critics have taken notice. \n\nTickets: $20 \n\n\nMax 50 ppl \nTickets sold online until 3:00 pm on the date of the event. You can also get your tickets at the door.

SUMMARY:How to Make a Mask: An imagination-driven exploration of the self through the art of mask-making with Jacqueline Lopez
DESCRIPTION:A mask can instantly transform a person into someone or something else. \nSince humans first walked on earth\, making masks has been one of the earliest forms of art. \nIn almost every culture\, masks have been used for ceremony\, disguise\, protection from evil\, and entertainment \nMasks transcend art\, morphing identities through time. From ancient cultures to modern times\, they serve ceremonies\, disguises\, and protection\, embodying a rich tapestry of Self-expression. \n\n \nThis workshop requires no artistic background.\n \nThe process will involve wet plaster to make a mold of each persons face and then painting the mask.\n \n\nSunday Sept 22 from 10 am to 1 pm\n \n$140 or $115 OHCA members\nPlus $15 Materials Fee to be paid to the instructor the day of the workshop\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT JACQUELINE\nJacqueline Lopez is an artist\, educator\, born on the border of Brazil and Paraguay. \nA former CPA turned artist and sacred plant activist\, focused on creative play through all art forms. \nUsing different mediums\, Jacqueline unpacks her spiritual lineage through works that reclaim ancestral memory\, hold space for reverence\, and create a uniquely Hispanic-Portuguese and the Guarani indigenous iconography. \nHer artwork honors those who walked before her\, who carried and sustained rituals from her ancestors\, her grandfather who practiced folk medicine. It also borrows from various alchemical traditions to create her own sense of the sacred.

SUMMARY:Monoprinting – with Candis Cousins. Sept. 15 Session rescheduled to Sept. 29 - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This session was originally scheduled for September 15. \nWE ARE NOW OFFERING THIS WORKSHOP TWICE A MONTH \nMonoprinting is a playful\, exploratory process requiring neither a press nor a background in art\n \nOn a plate of gel or plexiglass\, images are made with paint\, rollers\, sponges\, netting\, leaves or anything else which might create an interesting pattern. The focus is not upon the finished work but upon the experience of discovery and making art. \nIn the workshop\, after two or three hours\, the group gathers to discuss what has been created.  The purpose of the discussion is to help each person recognize the beauty in their work. Or\, in the words of Ann O’Hanlon\, our purpose is “to look upon a seemingly random work of our own with interest” and with “the same fulfillment… experienced on an unknown wilderness trail.” \nSundays\, 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.\n$55 | $44 OHCA members + \n$10 materials fee paid to facilitator on day of workshop \n7 people MAX\n \nART DETAIL: JANET GREENWOOD\n \n\nAbout Candis Cousins \n  \nCandis Cousins first came to the Center in 1972. Ann O’Hanlon was alive and at that time the Center was called ‘Sight and Insight.’ On Candis’ first day\, Ann’s suggestion for working was this: “Every decision you make\, try to make the wrong decision.” \nIn 2002\, Candis returned to OHCA to join the mono printing group led by Cayen Robertson and Karen Cox. In her own work\, Candis tries to keep moving forward without a plan\, just to see what comes. \n  \n“It is such an invigorating\, soul-finding experience to facilitate this workshop. A love-fest\, a laugh-fest on the high seas of creativity!” \n– Candis \n

SUMMARY:Wabi Sabi Ink Painting with Sherrie Lovler
DESCRIPTION:Wabi Sabi Ink Painting with Sherrie Lovler\nSunday\, October 13\, 2024 10 am – 4 pm with ½-hour lunch break \n$175 non-member / $140 OHCA member\nmaterials fee: $15 + supply list \nWabi Sabi is the Japanese aesthetic of finding beauty in life’s imperfections. This is a great concept for letting go of the desire for perfectionism and freeing ourselves to explore the uncontrolled parts of life — even purposefully getting there with our art. A great example of this is experiencing the magic that happens when ink meets water\, or gestural marks that are made without planning. \nWe will work with Asian brushes and ink to make calligraphic lines that express both movement and stillness. Watercolor will be added as accents. Beginning with meditation and centering ourselves\, we will get our whole body involved as we work from the heart to paint the ensō (the Zen practice of drawing a circle). From the East\, we will incorporate the concepts of empty space — allowing the painting to breathe\, and qi — the living energy of the painting. \nFrom the West\, we will work with line\, color\, shape\, movement\, rhythm and other elements and principles of design. Here\, our guiding themes will be value and contrast. The conversation with our pages will be “What is already happening\, and what do I do next?” \nEmbrace the unknown as we explore abstract art from both Eastern and Western perspectives to create several finished paintings. No experience is needed. \nRecommended materials to bring to the workshop\, please click on this link: Wabi Sabi Ink Painting 2024 Supply List \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \nSherrie Lovler has a BA in Studio Art and has been teaching calligraphy and related arts for several decades. She is well known in the western calligraphy world\, having taught at several international calligraphy conferences\, Ghost Ranch\, Friends of Calligraphy in San Francisco\, Society of Scribes in New York City\, LaRomita School of Art in Italy\, accredited classes at Northern Arizona University and the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts. She is the author\, illustrator and designer of On Softer Ground: Paintings\, Poems and Calligraphy\, which won a gold medal for Most Outstanding Book Design from Independent Publishers Book Awards\, 2016. Sherrie exhibits her work regularly\, loves teaching both online and in person. www.artandpoetry.com\n\n\n\n  \n  \n

He has been marbling ever since in the marbling studio he built in his garage. \nHe loves to introduce this amazing and addictive art process to others. He covers datebooks\, journals\, blank books and the like with his marbled paper. \nHampton grew up in the Southern United States\, studied engineering in college\, moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988 and has just retired from being a Presbyterian minister for the past 35+ years. He is married and has 4 grown children. He loves to tell stories\, practice spirituality\, backpack in Yosemite in the summer\, ride his bike and marble paper!
