SUMMARY:Monoprint w/ Candis Cousins - August 17 Canceled
DESCRIPTION:August we are taking a break from Monoprint but will be back in September on the  1 and 3 Sunday! \nMonoprinting is a playful\, exploratory process requiring neither a press nor a background in art\n \nOn a plate of gel or plexiglass\, images are made with paint\, rollers\, sponges\, netting\, leaves or anything else which might create an interesting pattern. The focus is not upon the finished work but upon the experience of discovery and making art. \nIn the workshop\, after two or three hours\, the group gathers to discuss what has been created.  The purpose of the discussion is to help each person recognize the beauty in their work. Or\, in the words of Ann O’Hanlon\, our purpose is “to look upon a seemingly random work of our own with interest” and with “the same fulfillment… experienced on an unknown wilderness trail.” \nSundays\, 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.\n$55 | $44 OHCA members + \n$10 materials fee paid to facilitator on day of workshop \n7 people MAX\n \nART DETAIL: JANET GREENWOOD\n \n\nAbout Candis Cousins \nCandis Cousins first came to the Center in 1972. Ann O’Hanlon was alive and at that time the Center was called ‘Sight and Insight.’ On Candis’ first day\, Ann’s suggestion for working was this: “Every decision you make\, try to make the wrong decision.” \nIn 2002\, Candis returned to OHCA to join the mono printing group led by Cayen Robertson and Karen Cox. In her own work\, Candis tries to keep moving forward without a plan\, just to see what comes. \n  \n“It is such an invigorating\, soul-finding experience to facilitate this workshop. A love-fest\, a laugh-fest on the high seas of creativity!” \n– Candis \n

SUMMARY:Developing Black and White Film with Chemistry made from Mill Valley Plants with Beatrice Thornton
DESCRIPTION:Learn to develop your black and white film in plant-based film developer chemistry with a selection of teas made from foraged plants currently in abundance in Mill Valley\, part of the Northern California Coast bioregion! \nWorkshop participants will have the option to bring 1 or 2 (preferred) rolls of film (35mm preferred\, 120 ok\, too!) that they have already exposed/ shot in advance. Please try to shoot Kentmere 400 or 100\, Ilford HP5 400\, or Delta 100. \nIf you are unable to purchase and shoot film in advance of the workshop\, Beatrice will have film and cameras available for folks to use during the workshop. Participants will have time to explore the lovely grounds of OHCA during the first part of the workshop\, where we will learn about some of the plants we’ll be using to develop our film. \nParticipants can pay a $30 materials fee for two rolls of film and use of camera on the day of the workshop\, if planning to shoot film during the workshop. \nWe will all develop our film together starting with one roll and then improvise for the second roll based on results of the first. \nThe workshop format is likewise a meditative practice in non-attachment\, so please keep in mind that results will vary. Participants will come away with an understanding of basic sustainable and low-toxicity darkroom practices that they can continue at home. \nAll other materials will be provided. No experience developing or loading film tanks is necessary. Beatrice is willing to demonstrate and assist with loading. \nPricing: \n\n\n\n\n$95 if shooting film in advance to bring to the workshop —see below description for preferred film stock details and below links to physical and online stores in the bay area to purchase film.\n$30 materials fee if shooting film on day of workshop—35mm cameras and film available during workshop for use.\n*All developing equipment and chemistry otherwise provided.\n\n12 participants max \nBay Area Photo Shops and Labs that sell film: \n\n\nhttps://www.seawood.shop – San Rafaelhttps://www.underdogfilmlab.com – Oaklandhttps://www.royalwefilmlab.com – Oaklandhttps://www.photolaboratory.com – Berkeleyhttps://www.lookingglassphoto.com – Berkeleyhttps://www.photoworkssf.com – SFhttps://www.glasskeyphoto.com – SF \nA couple online locations: \nhttps://filmphotographystore.comhttps://www.bhphotovideo.com \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Facilitator\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Beatrice Thornton is an Oakland-based land artist\, archivist\, historian\, and darkroom instructor working in black-and-white film photography through sustainable\, alternative darkroom processes equally in dialogue with place and medium. Since moving back to the Bay Area from New York in 2018\, she has been exploring ways that reconnect her to her home state — along the way learning\, questioning\, and considering its complex histories with a sense of wonder spanning environmentalism\, art and design history\, archival methods\, and darkroom-based graphic design. \nShe develops film and prints in her home darkroom\, creating developer recipes using ingredients including foraged plants\, collected rainwater\, and low-toxicity household ingredients in place of traditional darkroom chemistry. \nHer photographic style often features landscapes and architecture through in-camera double exposures and compositions that connect multiple images\, or which use the same negative multiple times and at various scales and orientations. She pairs developers with plants featured in or that grow within the environments pictured. She sees developing with plants as a circular process where the art she produces is as much about process as it is the final objects. \nBeatriceVictoria.com\n@Beathornton – Instagram

In addition to marbling sheets of paper\, I use my marbled paper to cover journals\, datebooks\, address books\, etc.\, to make bookmarks and other paper creations. I also sell sheet of marbled paper.

SUMMARY:Monochrome Magic - Day 2 with Naomi Tamura
DESCRIPTION:Monochrome Magic: A Two-Day Workshop in Expressive Simplicity\nExplore value\, mood\, and material through one color. \nWith Naomi Tamura \nDay 2  \nIn this two-day workshop\, we’ll explore the rich potential of working within a limited palette\, using just one color (and its range of values) to create compelling\, layered works of art. Participants will engage with monochromatic drawing\, painting\, and mixed-media techniques\, incorporating elements such as collage\, texture\, and mark-making to build depth\, evoke emotion\, and create a narrative. \nAfter introducing the fundamentals of monochromatic art\, each artist will be encouraged to select a color to explore and experiment with\, layering visual storytelling using a variety of materials\, including graphite\, ink\, paint\, and found materials. On Day Two\, artists can further work on their selected color or choose a second color to explore abstraction\, mood\, or personal themes in more depth. \nPrice is for both days: $115 or $80 for OHCA members.  $20 materials fee to be paid to the instructors firs day of class. \nGet ready for our November Monochromatic show in the Gallery! \n\n\n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Monoprint w/ Candis Cousins - October 5
DESCRIPTION:WE ARE OFFERING THIS WORKSHOP TWICE A MONTH \nMonoprinting is a playful\, exploratory process requiring neither a press nor a background in art\n \nOn a plate of gel or plexiglass\, images are made with paint\, rollers\, sponges\, netting\, leaves or anything else which might create an interesting pattern.

She has now settled comfortably into her favorite idiom\, the Blues. Often joining forces with some of the top names in the business\, Maria has recorded and produced on-average an album per year\, several of which have been nominated for Grammys and other awards.

SUMMARY: Inside JUNK JOURNALING with Peller
DESCRIPTION:Junk journaling is a creative and mindful craft that blends scrapbooking and collaging\, serving as a heartfelt response to the fleeting nature of digital life. In a world dominated by screens and instant communication\, junk journaling invites you to slow down and reconnect with tangible\, physical materials—snipping\, gluing\, and layering to create meaningful art. \nBy transforming everyday “trash” like parking tickets\, luggage tags\, ticket stubs\, or even pieces of pizza boxes into beautiful collages\, you can discover the magic in the overlooked and discarded. It’s a fun challenge to seek out items you might normally toss away and repurpose them into personal journal entries or artistic pieces. \nAdopting a collector’s eye encourages mindfulness and observation\, inspiring you to notice the small ephemera of daily life—receipts\, labels\, snippets of wrapping paper—and see them as treasures waiting to be incorporated into your journal. \nJoin this creative journey to add a little magic and intentionality to your day-to-day life. Embrace the imperfect\, the transient\, and the beautiful in the ordinary through junk journaling—where one person’s junk becomes another’s treasured story. \nJoin me in adding a little magic to your day to day. \n \n

SUMMARY:Monoprint w/ Candis Cousins - November 16
DESCRIPTION:WE ARE OFFERING THIS WORKSHOP TWICE A MONTH \nMonoprinting is a playful\, exploratory process requiring neither a press nor a background in art\n \nOn a plate of gel or plexiglass\, images are made with paint\, rollers\, sponges\, netting\, leaves or anything else which might create an interesting pattern.
