It breeds excitement and enjoyment of the process. \nI like the mix of people and their art. \nIt is free and fun. \nI like that I can get into the flow of art and forget the stressful world. \nI look forward to stepping into another time and place. It is a magical experience to visit this special piece of land at the foot of Mt Tam. \nBeing with people who care about art and artists is something I find worthwhile. I feel lucky to have discovered this class. It informs me well beyond 4 hours on Saturday. \nThis Saturday workshop serves as a tool to open up all of my senses and I  come alive. \nThe setting is gorgeous and serene. \nI love Saturday class. I wouldn’t think of missing it. I come every Saturday\, and have for years and years.

SUMMARY:Monoprinting w/ CANDIS COUSINS 10/1/23
DESCRIPTION:WE ARE NOW OFFERING THIS WORKSHOP TWICE A MONTH \nMonoprinting is a playful\, exploratory process requiring neither a press nor a background in art\n \nOn a plate of gel or plexiglass\, images are made with paint\, rollers\, sponges\, netting\, leaves or anything else which might create an interesting pattern. The focus is not upon the finished work but upon the experience of discovery and making art. \nIn the workshop\, after two or three hours\, the group gathers to discuss what has been created.  The purpose of the discussion is to help each person recognize the beauty in their work. Or\, in the words of Ann O’Hanlon\, our purpose is “to look upon a seemingly random work of our own with interest” and with “the same fulfillment… experienced on an unknown wilderness trail.” \nSundays\, 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.\n$55\, $44 OHCA members\, \n$10 materials fee paid to facilitator on day of workshop \n7 people MAX (online registration closes at 3:00pm the prior Friday)\n \nART DETAIL: JANET GREENWOOD \n\n  \n \nAbout Candis Cousins \nCandis Cousins first came to the Center in 1972. Ann O’Hanlon was alive and at that time the Center was called ‘Sight and Insight.’ On Candis’ first day\, Ann’s suggestion for working was this: “Every decision you make\, try to make the wrong decision.” \nIn 2002\, Candis returned to OHCA to join the mono printing group led by Cayen Robertson and Karen Cox. In her own work\, Candis tries to keep moving forward without a plan\, just to see what comes. \n“It is such an invigorating\, soul-finding experience to facilitate this workshop. A love-fest\, a laugh-fest on the high seas of creativity!”\n– Candis \n\n

While she was pregnant and living in a Tibetan Buddhist monastery\, as an offering my mother planted 3\,000 roses\, inspiring the name Amanda Rose. Living in this three dimensional mandala where colorful Tibetan banners blew in the wind and the light glinted on the gold leafed stupa\, cultivated a love of beauty and an openness to unseen realms. \nIn college\, at UC Santa Cruz\, I studied Fine Art and formed special kinships with painter Melissa Gwynn and performance artist Elizabeth Stephens. Gwynn taught me the beauty of experimentation and obsession in art. Stephens invited me to exhibit with her and Annie Sprinkle in their Eco-Sexual Symposium\, where we committed to being lovers to the earth. \nDuring my senior year and after graduation I fell in love with the work of Helen and Newton Harrison\, amazingly they were local professors and artists and needed an artists assistant. The mother and father of the environmental art movement were writing a retrospective of their work which I helped to transcribe. In the fall of 2013 I received the opportunity to travel to Sarnath\, India and assist in painting a mural inside the main hall of the Institute under artists Kaveri and TJ Singh as well as assisting with installing three dimensional epoxy resin cast and gold leafed Tibetan script across the outer walls of the Sarnath International Nyingma Institute. \nIn the past few years I found my tribe in Sonoma County and the North Bay Area while exhibiting at the 2019 and 2022 and 2022 Bioneers Conferences and participating in exhibits at the Healdsburg Center for the Arts\, Riley Street Art Supply and Sebastopol Center for the Arts. \nartofnature.me

SUMMARY:Artists’ Retreat – FALL 2023
DESCRIPTION:OHCA retreats offer a rare\, deepening experience. In the expanse of time\, the quiet and the connection to friends working nearby\, my confidence and powers of insight are strengthened.”\n– Candis Cousins \nMonday to Friday\,\nOctober 23-27\, 2023\n9 a.m. to 5 p.m. \nOHCA is once again offering a week-long ARTIST RETREAT. This is a 5-day opportunity for artists to work independently but in the company of other dedicated artists.  This is not a workshop\, and there will be no instruction. What there will be is an opportunity for serious self-directed artists to work in a quiet atmosphere for a sustained period of time\, working together but independently in the spirit of creativity. \nThe Retreat is open to anyone who agrees to some simple rules.  There is to be no talking except for quietly outside during the hours of 9 – 5 and no music is allowed except with earphones.   No visitors. Participants will be responsible for their own lunch and art supplies unless otherwise designated. Artists may leave their supplies and work set up during the week and will be required to clean up afterwards. \nSpace is limited to 5 visual artists and 1 writer.  Space allocations will be determined by the group. \nFriday afternoon everyone gets together to socialize and share their work/process. \n  \nWeek-long retreat: $180; $150 OHCA members. \n  \n  \n  \nPhotos: Janet Greenwood

SUMMARY:Making a Wabi-Sabi Book - In Person with Sherrie Lovler
DESCRIPTION:Something magical happens where ink meets water on a page\nWabi-sabi is the Japanese aesthetic of appreciating beauty in imperfection. Using this as our underlying guide\, something magical happens in the uncontrolled parts on a page where ink meets water. \nWe will contrast these natural occurrences with calligraphic lines and gestures using sumi ink and brushes on good quality paper. Beginning with getting centered and present in our bodies\, you will be led step by step into this process of making several spontaneous-looking pages that will be sewn into a 5″ x 10″ Japanese stab bound book. Final artistic touches will be added to make the book flow from page to page. \nNo art or bookbinding experience is needed. \n  \n Sunday November 12\, 202310:00 am – 3:30 pm with 1/2 hour lunch break \n$150 or $120 OHCA members \n$25 materials fee paid to instructor day of class.Sherrie will supply all the paper and ink etc. Some materials participants should bring – list sent when registered. \nMaximum 8 participants.Register by Friday Nov 10 3 pm. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE FACILITATOR\nSherrie Lovler has been teaching calligraphy and related arts for several decades.
