SUMMARY:Wabi Sabi Photography Workshop with Jackie La Lanne and Naomi Tamura
DESCRIPTION:Slow down\, look closer\, and discover the beauty in impermanence and imperfection. In this one-day photography workshop inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi\, students will explore how to capture the quiet poetry of the world around them through a contemplative photographic lens. \nWe’ll begin with a brief introduction to the principles of wabi-sabi\, followed by a guided photo walk on the grounds of the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts. The class emphasizes mindful seeing\, intuitive framing\, and embracing the imperfect or unexpected. Towards the end of class\, we will gather for an informal group discussion and photo review. Students are encouraged to bring previously taken images to explore whether they reflect wabi-sabi qualities. \nThis class is open to photographers of all levels. Whether you’re new to photography or seeking a deeper\, more meditative creative approach\, you’ll leave with a refreshed eye and a deeper appreciation for the imperfect beauty of the world around us. \nDate: Thursday\, July 10 \nTime 1:00 – 4:00 pm \nMin 4 max 8 \n$65 or $50 OHCA members \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What to Bring: \n\nAny camera you’re comfortable with — DSLR\, mirrorless\, point-and-shoot\, or smartphone\nPreviously taken photos (digital or printed) for group review\nFully charged battery and memory card\, or phone storage\nNotebook or sketchbook and pen for reflections\nWeather-appropriate clothing\, walking shoes\, and some water to drink.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Facilitators\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jackie La Lanne retired at the end of 2021 from over 30 years teaching art in the Mill Valley School district. She is currently Board President of of O’Hanlon. She graduated from Sonoma State University with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Studio Art and a Masters Degree in Art Education. She loves teaching art and making photographs\, which she says have a lot in common: discovering\, making\, envisioning\, sharing\, and having fun. La Lanne\, who can often be found in the artroom wearing the earrings she made from her old bike lock keys\, has been teaching elementary art curriculum in Mill Valley public schools for many years. She is an accomplished artist\, teacher\, and photographer and has created wonderful collaborative textile projects for her five grandchildren. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Naomi Tamura is a visual artist based in Mill Valley\, California\, working in acrylic paint\, drawing media\, and photography. Her work blends representation with intuition\, exploring themes of memory\, emotion\, and atmosphere through expressive mark-making and the lens of a camera. A lifelong artist\, Tamura studied Studio Art at Scripps College and graphic design at ArtCenter College of Design\, leading to a 20-year career as a designer and art director. After stepping away from commercial work in 2011\, she returned to fine art with a renewed focus. Tamura’s creative practice reflects a range of influences—from the Bay Area Figurative Movement to Post-Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism. She has exhibited at the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts\, where she served as a former board chair\, and remains active in the local arts community. Photography plays a vital role in her process\, serving as both inspiration and a form of artistic expression.

SUMMARY:Wabi Sabi Ink Painting with Sherrie Lovler
DESCRIPTION:Wabi Sabi Ink Painting with Sherrie Lovler\nSunday\, October 13\, 2024 10 am – 4 pm with ½-hour lunch break \n$175 non-member / $140 OHCA member\nmaterials fee: $15 + supply list \nWabi Sabi is the Japanese aesthetic of finding beauty in life’s imperfections. This is a great concept for letting go of the desire for perfectionism and freeing ourselves to explore the uncontrolled parts of life — even purposefully getting there with our art. A great example of this is experiencing the magic that happens when ink meets water\, or gestural marks that are made without planning. \nWe will work with Asian brushes and ink to make calligraphic lines that express both movement and stillness. Watercolor will be added as accents. Beginning with meditation and centering ourselves\, we will get our whole body involved as we work from the heart to paint the ensō (the Zen practice of drawing a circle). From the East\, we will incorporate the concepts of empty space — allowing the painting to breathe\, and qi — the living energy of the painting. \nFrom the West\, we will work with line\, color\, shape\, movement\, rhythm and other elements and principles of design. Here\, our guiding themes will be value and contrast. The conversation with our pages will be “What is already happening\, and what do I do next?” \nEmbrace the unknown as we explore abstract art from both Eastern and Western perspectives to create several finished paintings. No experience is needed. \nRecommended materials to bring to the workshop\, please click on this link: Wabi Sabi Ink Painting 2024 Supply List \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \nSherrie Lovler has a BA in Studio Art and has been teaching calligraphy and related arts for several decades. She is well known in the western calligraphy world\, having taught at several international calligraphy conferences\, Ghost Ranch\, Friends of Calligraphy in San Francisco\, Society of Scribes in New York City\, LaRomita School of Art in Italy\, accredited classes at Northern Arizona University and the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts. She is the author\, illustrator and designer of On Softer Ground: Paintings\, Poems and Calligraphy\, which won a gold medal for Most Outstanding Book Design from Independent Publishers Book Awards\, 2016. Sherrie exhibits her work regularly\, loves teaching both online and in person. www.artandpoetry.com\n\n\n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Making a Wabi-Sabi Book - In Person with Sherrie Lovler
DESCRIPTION:Something magical happens where ink meets water on a page\nWabi-sabi is the Japanese aesthetic of appreciating beauty in imperfection. Using this as our underlying guide\, something magical happens in the uncontrolled parts on a page where ink meets water. \nWe will contrast these natural occurrences with calligraphic lines and gestures using sumi ink and brushes on good quality paper. Beginning with getting centered and present in our bodies\, you will be led step by step into this process of making several spontaneous-looking pages that will be sewn into a 5″ x 10″ Japanese stab bound book. Final artistic touches will be added to make the book flow from page to page. \nNo art or bookbinding experience is needed. \n  \n Sunday November 12\, 202310:00 am – 3:30 pm with 1/2 hour lunch break \n$150 or $120 OHCA members \n$25 materials fee paid to instructor day of class.Sherrie will supply all the paper and ink etc. Some materials participants should bring – list sent when registered. \nMaximum 8 participants.Register by Friday Nov 10 3 pm. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE FACILITATOR\nSherrie Lovler has been teaching calligraphy and related arts for several decades.
