SUMMARY:Artists’ Retreat – Summer 2023
DESCRIPTION:OHCA retreats offer a rare\, deepening experience. In the expanse of time\, the quiet and the connection to friends working nearby\, my confidence and powers of insight are strengthened.”\n– Candis Cousins \nMonday to Friday\, June 26–30\, 2023.\n9 a.m. to 5 p.m. \nOHCA is once again offering a week-long ARTIST RETREAT. This is a 5-day opportunity for artists to work independently but in the company of other dedicated artists.  This is not a workshop\, and there will be no instruction. What there will be is an opportunity for serious self-directed artists to work in a quiet atmosphere for a sustained period of time\, working together but independently in the spirit of creativity. \nThe Retreat is open to anyone who agrees to some simple rules.  There is to be no talking except for quietly outside during the hours of 9 – 5 and no music is allowed except with earphones.   No visitors. Participants will be responsible for their own lunch and art supplies unless otherwise designated. Artists may leave their supplies and work set up during the week and will be required to clean up afterwards. \nThere is a limited amount of space available for this retreat.  There is space for 6 Visual Artists. Spaces are given to those who reserve first and with fees paid.  If we find we have many more applicants than we have space\, we may schedule another retreat. \nFriday afternoon everyone gets together to socialize and share their work/process. \n  \nWeek-long retreat: $180; $150 OHCA members. \nSix artists max \n  \n  \n  \nPhotos: Janet Greenwood

SUMMARY:Developing Film with Plants w/ BEATRICE THORNTON
DESCRIPTION:Experience the world around you in a different light…\n…and learn how to develop film sustainably without traditional darkroom chemistry. In this workshop\, participants will take photos with black-and-white film\, learn about local native and invasive plants\, and develop film with low-toxicity\, homemade\, plant-based chemistry. \nThe workshop will be composed of three parts: \n1. An introduction to process: the instructor will give a brief presentation of her work and experiments with sustainable developers \n2. Photo walk and foraging for plants to use in developers: wandering individually or as a group around the grounds of OHCA or down the street in Cascade Canyon. \n3. Darkroom: making developers and developing the film. \nNo prior darkroom experience is necessary\, but please inform the instructor if you do have any experience with film developing. Participants are also welcome to bring their own 35mm or 120 cameras and developing tanks. A selection of cameras\, film\, and all other necessary materials will be provided. \nThe instructor will also offer to perform any tasks for participants — aside from actually taking the pictures. These include loading film in cameras\, loading film in tanks\, and mixing chemistry. The instructor will offer to scan film afterwards if this is desired. If film is dry by the end of the workshop\, this can be done quickly\, or participants can pick up film and scans will be emailed at a later date. \nA selection of pre-brewed plants will be available should anyone want to use these for developers. Chemicals used for developing\, stopping\, and fixing include: washing soda\, Vitamin-C\, steeped plants\, water\, and EcoPro Fixer. All chemicals will be disposed of safely by the instructor. \n  \n$72 or $60 OHCA member \nMaterials fee $20 paid to instructor day of workshop \nAttendance Limit: 8 \nRegister by Friday June 9\, 2:00 pm \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the instructor: \nBeatrice Thornton is an Oakland-based artist who grew up in Mill Valley. She works primarily in black-and-white film photography through the lens of bioregionalism\, engaging in awareness of our role as humans in our environments. Since returning to her home state from New York in 2018\, she has been building an art practice centered around sustainable analog photographic processes. \nBeatrice develops film and prints in her home darkroom\, creating developer recipes and using ingredients that include foraged plants\, rainwater\, and low-toxicity household ingredients in place of traditional darkroom chemicals. Her evolving photographic style mainly depicts her local landscape\, often through in-camera double exposures. She frequently pairs developers with plants featured in or that grow within the landscape pictured. \nBeatrice sees developing with plants as a circular process where the art she produces is as much about process as it is the final objects. Her work is a continuous practice of learning about photography and about native and invasive plants.

SUMMARY:Collaborative Painting Workshop w/ HELEN COHEN and DIANE GOLDSTEIN (POSTPONED)
DESCRIPTION:This Workshop has been POSTPONED until Fall 2023. Date TBD.\nLet your free spirit leap out and play!\n  \n$125 or $100 for OHCA Members \n \nEach participant must have a partner for this workshop.  Each person registers separately. Max 10 people. \n \nFirst of all\, abstract collaborative painting is really fun!  Participants will be trying something different such as: letting go of outcome and working on large canvas/paper spontaneously with a partner of your choice. Let your free spirit leap out and play! \nCollaboration can bring a new and powerful experience to your art process: unexpected things emerge through an exchange of ideas and listening/responding to the painting together with your partner. It will require mutual respect\, mutual effort and letting go of ego. \nParticipants will need to have a prearranged partner to register for the workshop\, but register separately. \nThere will be demonstrations and tips for getting loose and working together through out the process. \nDuring the last hour of the workshop\, participants will have time to share their process and their paintings with the group. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Suggested Supplies to bring:\nMixed Media: water soluble paint\, markers\, crayons\, graphite\, collage and whatever materials you and your partner want to incorporate. (No oil)  Bring a variety of brushes or other instruments for making marks.  Bring palette paper or paper plates\, water containers and acrylic or water color paint. You may want to use a variety of brush sizes to work spontaneously. Water soluble house paint can be fun. \nPlease bring one or two large canvases or paper: we suggest a minimum 48 x 48\, but encourage 48 x 60 so there will be ample room to work with your partner simultaneously. Or if you wish\, O’Hanlon has large rolled paper that you can use.  Depending on the timing\, you may want to make more than one large piece. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE FACILITATORS\nHelen and Diane are both mixed media artists who live and work in San Francisco. They have been sharing a studio at Yosemite Place in the Bayview district for over ten years. \nHelen S.
