SUMMARY:Monochrome Magic - Day 2 with Naomi Tamura
DESCRIPTION:Monochrome Magic: A Two-Day Workshop in Expressive Simplicity\nExplore value\, mood\, and material through one color. \nWith Naomi Tamura \nDay 2  \nIn this two-day workshop\, we’ll explore the rich potential of working within a limited palette\, using just one color (and its range of values) to create compelling\, layered works of art. Participants will engage with monochromatic drawing\, painting\, and mixed-media techniques\, incorporating elements such as collage\, texture\, and mark-making to build depth\, evoke emotion\, and create a narrative. \nAfter introducing the fundamentals of monochromatic art\, each artist will be encouraged to select a color to explore and experiment with\, layering visual storytelling using a variety of materials\, including graphite\, ink\, paint\, and found materials. On Day Two\, artists can further work on their selected color or choose a second color to explore abstraction\, mood\, or personal themes in more depth. \nPrice is for both days: $115 or $80 for OHCA members.  $20 materials fee to be paid to the instructors firs day of class. \nGet ready for our November Monochromatic show in the Gallery! \n\n\n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Intermediate Marbling - Day 2 with Hampton Deck
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for those with previous marbling experience. (You can take the class the previous day to get that experience!) \nEach student will have their own marbling tray\, set of acrylic paints\, nails\, rakes\, and combs for use during the workshop. The instructor\, Hampton Deck\, will share classic paint patterns and alternate between demonstrating and helping students as they do it themselves. You will produce many beautiful marbled papers for your own pleasure & use! Less emphasis will be put on instruction\, and more on producing marbled papers. The instructor will try to personally help students who need help with technique\, etc. \nPlease bring a lunch and $30 Materials fee to be paid to instructor at start of workshop. \n \nAbout Hampton Deck: \nEducation: I learned to marble from Pamela Smith\, a world renown marbler\, at her studio in Abiqui\, New Mexico\, in July 2015. Pamela has marbled papers in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.  I have also taken classes with Regina & Dan St John of Chena River Marblers\, who are also world renown marblers\, and who also have papers in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.  I have also taken Ebru (the Turkish name for marbling) lessons in Istanbul\, Turkey. \nExperience: I set up my own marbling studio in my garage in Benicia\, CA\, shortly after learning the art from Pamela Smith. Since 2015 I have marbled literally thousands of sheets of marbled paper in my studio\, and have taught many classes. In addition to marbling sheets of paper\, I use my marbled paper to cover journals\, datebooks\, address books\, etc.\, to make bookmarks and other paper creations. I also sell sheet of marbled paper.

SUMMARY:Monoprint with Jackie La Lanne - July 20
DESCRIPTION:WE ARE OFFERING THIS WORKSHOP TWICE A MONTH \nMonoprinting is a playful\, exploratory process requiring neither a press nor a background in art\n \nOn a plate of gel or plexiglass\, images are made with paint\, rollers\, sponges\, netting\, leaves or anything else which might create an interesting pattern. The focus is not upon the finished work but upon the experience of discovery and making art. \nIn the workshop\, after two or three hours\, the group gathers to discuss what has been created.  The purpose of the discussion is to help each person recognize the beauty in their work. Or\, in the words of Ann O’Hanlon\, our purpose is “to look upon a seemingly random work of our own with interest” and with “the same fulfillment… experienced on an unknown wilderness trail.” \nSundays\, 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.\n$55 | $44 OHCA members + \n$10 materials fee paid to facilitator on day of workshop \n7 people MAX\n \nART DETAIL: JANET GREENWOOD\n \n\nAbout Candis Cousins \nCandis Cousins first came to the Center in 1972. Ann O’Hanlon was alive and at that time the Center was called ‘Sight and Insight.’ On Candis’ first day\, Ann’s suggestion for working was this: “Every decision you make\, try to make the wrong decision.” \nIn 2002\, Candis returned to OHCA to join the mono printing group led by Cayen Robertson and Karen Cox. In her own work\, Candis tries to keep moving forward without a plan\, just to see what comes. \n  \n“It is such an invigorating\, soul-finding experience to facilitate this workshop. A love-fest\, a laugh-fest on the high seas of creativity!” \n– Candis \n

Raised in Mexico\, my first large installation as a teenager was a set of yarn headboards inspired by the Cora Indian technique of yarn appliqué. I spent my summers as an apprentice to a batik artist in Mexico City. \n\n\nTravels and an M.A. in textiles led me to an exciting teaching career at Fort Mason Art Center in San Francisco; art exhibitions\, awards and many trade shows such as the American Craft Council and Rosen throughout the country established my Bonika butlers and benches as a well-known whimsical and functional art form.” \n\n\nhttps://www.mounttamartists.org/projects/bonnie-himberg/

SUMMARY:Wabi Sabi Photography Workshop with Jackie La Lanne and Naomi Tamura
DESCRIPTION:Slow down\, look closer\, and discover the beauty in impermanence and imperfection. In this one-day photography workshop inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi\, students will explore how to capture the quiet poetry of the world around them through a contemplative photographic lens. \nWe’ll begin with a brief introduction to the principles of wabi-sabi\, followed by a guided photo walk on the grounds of the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts. The class emphasizes mindful seeing\, intuitive framing\, and embracing the imperfect or unexpected. Towards the end of class\, we will gather for an informal group discussion and photo review. Students are encouraged to bring previously taken images to explore whether they reflect wabi-sabi qualities. \nThis class is open to photographers of all levels. Whether you’re new to photography or seeking a deeper\, more meditative creative approach\, you’ll leave with a refreshed eye and a deeper appreciation for the imperfect beauty of the world around us. \nDate: Thursday\, July 10 \nTime 1:00 – 4:00 pm \nMin 4 max 8 \n$65 or $50 OHCA members \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n What to Bring: \n\nAny camera you’re comfortable with — DSLR\, mirrorless\, point-and-shoot\, or smartphone\nPreviously taken photos (digital or printed) for group review\nFully charged battery and memory card\, or phone storage\nNotebook or sketchbook and pen for reflections\nWeather-appropriate clothing\, walking shoes\, and some water to drink.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Facilitators\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jackie La Lanne retired at the end of 2021 from over 30 years teaching art in the Mill Valley School district. She is currently Board President of of O’Hanlon. She graduated from Sonoma State University with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Studio Art and a Masters Degree in Art Education. She loves teaching art and making photographs\, which she says have a lot in common: discovering\, making\, envisioning\, sharing\, and having fun. La Lanne\, who can often be found in the artroom wearing the earrings she made from her old bike lock keys\, has been teaching elementary art curriculum in Mill Valley public schools for many years. Her work blends representation with intuition\, exploring themes of memory\, emotion\, and atmosphere through expressive mark-making and the lens of a camera. A lifelong artist\, Tamura studied Studio Art at Scripps College and graphic design at ArtCenter College of Design\, leading to a 20-year career as a designer and art director. After stepping away from commercial work in 2011\, she returned to fine art with a renewed focus. Tamura’s creative practice reflects a range of influences—from the Bay Area Figurative Movement to Post-Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism. She has exhibited at the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts\, where she served as a former board chair\, and remains active in the local arts community. Photography plays a vital role in her process\, serving as both inspiration and a form of artistic expression.

She is an accomplished artist\, teacher\, and photographer and has created wonderful collaborative textile projects for her five grandchildren. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE FACILITATOR\nCandis Cousins first came to the Center in 1972. \n“It is such an invigorating\, soul-finding experience to facilitate this workshop. A love-fest\, a laugh-fest on the high seas of creativity!” \n– Candis
