The Way of Tea – Hosted by Green Gulch Farms Zen Center

June 6, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

A Tea Gathering in the Japanese Tradition

You are invited to join us for a bowl of green tea and an introduction to the Japanese tradition of “Chado” – the Way of Tea. Along with a discussion of the history and philosophy of Chado, and its relationship to the concepts of ‘wabi sabi,’ guests will be offered a sweet and a bowl of whisked matcha. There will also be explanation of the basic etiquette for being a guest at a tea gathering.

Chado developed centuries ago, influenced by Zen –  by the understanding that there is no separation between our ordinary daily life (eg. cleaning a room, preparing food) and our spiritual life. It may be described simply as making a fire, boiling water, and formally preparing and offering something to eat and a bowl of whisked green tea to guests. It is a mindfulness practice, an art, a social gathering, a heart-to-heart meeting of host and guest. Its study encompasses Japanese arts such as calligraphy, flower placement, cooking, garden design, and incense appreciation.

The hosts for this gathering are practitioners of the Urasenke Tradition of Tea, at Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, Sowing the Moon Teahouse.  For more information about Green Gulch visit:
