October 18, 2016 @ 6:15 pm - 8:15 pm

Sorry, this class has been cancelled. Please contact the OHCA office if you’re interested in a similar class in the future!

The Write Bank: A Personalized Children’s Book Writing Course

The Write Bank course is designed to provide personalized guidance for participants to best find and express their children’s book stories. In hands-on exercises, we will define what story is (as opposed to plot) and learn how to recognize when we have a good story. We will learn techniques to visualize our stories so that we create not just sentences, but images. We will learn how to find our “authentic voice, determine when to use dialogue and when to use narrative as well as the elements of good dialogue. Lastly, we will discuss the process of revision with the understanding that the word revision means just that—to see again. Often it is in revision we can find the true meaning of our story.

Participants are invited to come with either a juvenile novel manuscript or a partial manuscript (even one chapter is fine) or a synopsis or simply an idea for a book. No matter the progress so far, the focus is on understanding “where you need to go from here.” This is a session to help the individual move closer to having a publishable manuscript. Because the number of participants is small (4-8) each participant will receive –individualized counsel. As an added bonus, during the six weeks, each participant will benefit from a private 30-minute, in-person or phone call session that will provide additional personal guidance.

The workshop will consist of a mixture of lecture, discussion, readings, supportive critiques and hands-on exercises.
