Local Women Writers Series


In conjunction with OHCA’s Bay Area Women Artists gallery show, we are proud to present our fourth annual Local Women Writers Series featuring readings from acclaimed female writers based in Marin County.  The series features readers sharing a passage from a recent book, essay, or short story. A Q&A session with the audience will follow. 

Thursday, August 21;  Janine Kovac, Laurel Hilton, Marianne Lonsdale, and Samantha Parent Walravens

“Mamas Write: It’s Not All about the Kids.”

Janine Kovac

Janine Kovac is a talent-wrangler for Litquake, San Francisco’s literary festival and conference coordinator for digi.lit, Litquake’s digital publishing conference. She is co-editor and a contributing author of Mamas Write: 29 Tales of Truth, Wit, and Grit. Her work has also appeared in Salon.com, Literary Mama, Pregnancy and Newborn magazine, and in the anthology Nothing But the Truth So Help Me God. Janine is an alumna of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers and a co-founder of the Write On, Mamas! literary group. She lives in Oakland with her husband, their daughter and their twin boys, one of whom thinks he is a kitty cat.

Laurel Hilton

Laurel Hilton is a journalist, author and blogger. She is the co-founder and President of Write On, Mamas! Laurel is featured in the 2014 anthology Mamas Write and in the 2014 A Band of Women’s collection Transitions. She was a finalist in the 2013 Notes & Words Essay contest. Laurel is an alumna of The Op-Ed series, and has performed her work on KQED as well as SF LitCrawl.

She is thrilled to make her second appearance at the Local Women Writer Series, sponsored by O’Hanlon Center for the Arts. Laurel blogged every day in July as part of BlogHer’s National Blog Posting Month. She lives in Mill Valley with her family and a gaggle of animals.

Marianne Lonsdale

Marianne Lonsdale writes personal essays and short stories, and is now focused on developing a novel. Her work has been published in the San Francisco Chronicle, Literary Mama, Fiction365, Pulse and on KQED. She’s read at various events including San Francisco’s Litquake festival. She is honored to be an alumna of the Community of Writers at Squaw Valley. She lives with her husband, Michael, and son, Nicholas, in Oakland, California.

Samantha Parent Walravens

Samantha Parent Walravens is an award-winning journalist, writer and mother of four. Her writing has appeared in publications including PC World, Salon.com, Healthy Women, the Huffington Post, Urban Baby, Yahoo! News and several “mommy blogs.” Her book, Torn: True Stories of Kids, Career and the Conflict of Modern Motherhood, was chosen by the New York Times as the first pick for its new Motherlode online book club, and reached #1 on Amazon.com for books in the Motherhood category. She lives in Tiburon with her husband and kids, ages 6-12.
