This weekly workshop encourages the practice of creativity for artists and non-artists alike. Cayen helps each individual initiate and facilitate the dialogue between artist and the art which can emerge. You will find your medium and your personal visual language. You will stimulate and delight yourself by what you discover.
Cayen Robertson is an artist and O’Hanlon Center workshop facilitator who studied with Ann O’Hanlon from 1975 to 1990. She celebrated her 25th year of teaching here in May 2009. She is a working painter, sculptor and assemblage artist who has taught Visual Perception in Marin County schools and traveled extensively in Europe, studying art in private and public collections.
Monoprinting

This monthly workshop, featuring instruction in techniques as well as the opportunity to explore and experiment on your own, introduces participants to many different ways of doing monoprinting, a simple yet beautiful and variable form of printing on paper.

Printing with the Press

Monoprints allow for the greatest opportunity of free expression with printmaking. The etching press will be used to assist in this fun, magical process. The pressure of the press offers unique textures only obtainable with this simple tool. During the workshop series the painterly print, relief printing, and plate making will be introduced. Print registration, multiple drop, stencil and chine colle will be included. Personal expression and inventive use of materials will be encouraged. Water-soluble inks will be used. All levels are welcome. RSVP the Friday prior to each session to save your space.
Elaine Nehm studied with Japanese master printmaker painter, and sculptor, Shoichi Ida. She says, “During my adventure in printmaking I often find inspiration and support from the art masters. The following is a quote from Shoichi Ida, a teacher and mentor for me, ‘Art is not making a beautiful surface or drawing a realistic apple. Art is getting to an essence, reaching the senses.’”
Photo Forum

Art Salon

Explore interactive imagination, your personal symbols, and metaphors to increase your creativity! Seeing through a metaphoric lens increases creativity, encourages risk-taking, and adds depth to your art. Malaya V. Quinn, MA, facilitates "Art As Oracle" a unique approach combining interactive imagination and dialogue to explore the potent symbols that emerge from your personal imagery. Artists bring their art/creative projects, learn to engage the oracle within and present them to the group through the language of metaphor for inspiration and insight. Paper Arts

Explore the versatility of this seemingly humble medium! January’s class will focus on origami, including the paper vase and Lotus flower designs. February will highlight paper beads, just in time for Valentine’s gifting! In March, participants will learn how to make their own pop-up books. RSVP by the Friday before each session.
Sumi-e Ink Class
Thursdays, February 9; March 8.
7 to 9 p.m.

Sumi-e is an exciting medium to work in for it encourages spontaneity. The flexibility of the bamboo brush, the fluidity of the ink, and the sensitivity of the thin handmade paper enables a wonderful range of expression. One stroke can have a variety of both tone and texture. There will be an emphasis on expressive and spontaneous brushwork rather than formal technique. We'll work with both figurative and abstract themes. Participants are welcome to bring either sketches or paintings in other media that we'll re-interpret in sumi.

Painting with Acrylics
Saturdays, February 11; March 10.
3 to 6 p.m.
Single session: $34, $28 OHCA members plus list provided by office.
Explore the process of lyrical abstract and action paintings. Practice being present to the choices of each mark and layer placed on the canvas. By examining the works of artists from history and from today's art scene, we will discuss and attempt varying techniques. Please bring any images that inspire you as references for your paintings. All levels are welcome. RSVP by the Thursday prior to each session and please contact the OHCA office for a list of suggested materials.
Collage Playshop
Thursdays, February 16; March 15.

Enjoy a fun, creative afternoon or evening with in a safe community of like-minded souls and leave with your very own fine art collage(s)! Using a method pioneered by world-famous collage artist Jonathan Talbot called “Collage without Liquid Adhesives,” you will incorporate acrylics, gloss medium and found images into your piece. Materials supplied, but you are also welcome to bring images that you would like to work into your art. The Collage Playshop is suitable for all levels of artists. Come to one class or both! Inner Prints

Reveal your own inner mindscapes through an interactive sensorial process. Printing techniques without the use of press will be used. Emphasis will be upon building your own unique visual vocabulary based in universal objective elements. You will be encouraged to assist these works into the league of art. Within a safe environment both nurturing and non-judgmental the practicing artist will find it a refreshing venue. For the beginning artist it will be an easy first step. Collage Fest
Sunday, February 19.

Join collage artist Elaine Larson for a fun-filled day learning 4 different ways of making collages and trying out one or two (or more!) of them yourself. We will cover the Talbot Technique, the Sonoma Collage Collective processes, the methods of Kurt Schwitters, plus learn how to create a woven collage. All materials supplied, and feel free to bring your own found objects or special images. We will take a lunch break, so bring something good to eat too. RSVP by Thursday, February 16.
Active Imagination

Active Imagination is a method of inner work developed by Carl Jung. It uses imagination, meditative visualization and art to create a dialog with the unconscious, to access insight and untapped capacities as well as shed light on what is presently emerging. These classes are for individuals from all walks of life who desire deeper connection and direction in their personal and professional lives. Active Imagination is a proven method of accessing your creativity and inner resources. Please bring a journal to the class! And RSVP by the Friday prior to each session.
Art Box Making
Tuesday, February 28.

The half clamshell box consists of a small tray inside a case, covered with a book cloth of your choice. Two components are constructed separately and assembled in the final stage. This structure is perfect for protecting photos, limited edition prints, personal ephemera, or a handmade artist book. Some materials provided, but contact the office for additional suggested materials. RSVP by February 24.

Introduction to Oil Pastels

An overview of the versatility of oil pastels, and an introduction to Donna’s particular technique of additive/subtractive layers of oil pastel over textured black gesso. The class will also address individual students' interests. Handouts with resources and follow-up materials will be provided. RSVP by February 23. Donna received her BA in Art from UC Berkeley and continues to work as full-time artist with oil pastel/mixed media as well as art quilts.
Advanced Practice: Oil Pastels

This session will begin with an overview as needed (depending on students' experience); and will include additional techniques such as working smoothly, defining edges; creating textures w/acrylic, collage, colored pencils, etching needles, found objects; how to use oil pastel with other media, etc. RSVP by February 23. Altered Books
Tuesday, March 20.

Transforming books by using an assortment of low-tech printmaking, image transfer techniques and popular mediums, we will create art-objects that take an ordinary book and give it a new look and purpose. Please bring a few photo-copies of images you might want to use in your alteration. Some materials provided, but contact the office for additional suggested materials. RSVP by March 16.
Creating Papers with Natural Dyes

Explore creative possibilities through staining and preparing paper - all kinds - with tea and coffee, gesso, stencils, inclusions and more. Make the surface as fine or textured as fits your expression - ex. drawing on rag paper that's been gessoed and sanded renders a very refined drawing surface/experience whereas coffee or tea slinging with attendant stains and shapes suggest the inner abstract expressionist. Lots of fun to do with friends! RSVP by March 28.
Mess Ups & Mistakes: Unpacking the Inner Critic

All of us have an inner voice that judges in varying degrees of harshness. Professional artists experience blocks. Beginners are paralyzed by fears and cannot begin. What if you were able to view and appreciate the Inner Critic as a piece of art? What if you were able to get to know you Inner Critic and eventually treasure it? Sound impossible? Facilitator Taira Restar has done just that!
Using the Tamalpa Life/Art Process® as a container, this workshop will include movement warm-ups, art making, and reflection. With respect, care, humor and a light touch, we will explore the Inner Critic and invite it into a new relationship. Along the way, we’ll make mistakes …just for fun! RSVP by April 11.
